Maybe you didn’t notice, but the Commission: Impossible weekly newsletter did not go out last week. That can be partially blamed on an emergency surgery but it was mostly because Scott and I, along with a few other fantasy friends… I mean fantasy football friends, were having so much fun hanging out together for a weekend in St. Louis.
For those who have never visited the Gateway to the West, here are some quick dos and don’ts:
Do:
Plan an NFL Draft weekend with friend (anywhere, really)
Enjoy some Pappy’s Smokehouse Barbeque
Learn new board games
Bet on the NFL Draft, Kentucky Derby, Turtle Derby, and really… everything else you can think of
Don’t:
Try Imo’s Pizza. Ever.
Play pool against Scott Fish
Look at your phone, especially during the Draft. Tipped picks are the worst.
Wait, isn’t this newsletter about commissioning?
Oh, one other thing I suggest when getting together with like-minded friends is taking part in a live fantasy draft. Hopefully, this is something you’ve already experienced in your time playing fantasy sports, but it really is the best. I do have to admit that while we strongly considered starting a brand new dynasty league last weekend, it didn’t happen. What slowed us down, but eventually was solved, was the fact that we only had six people in the group. I’ve actually played in a six-person league. It was not fun. DLF Podcast host Dan Meylor had a solution though. This is something you could try with a smaller group of fantasy players.
Dan suggested that each of us actually control two teams in the league, not just one. This would immediately solve the issue of not having enough people, but he also had some fun other fun twists.
First, each manager would put together and run a team made up of NFC players and another for AFC, similar to the common practice in fantasy baseball of AL or NL-only leagues. This would also create the opportunity to build two different teams. Dan suggested using the typical draft format for one conference while the other would be formed via auction. A draft/auction hybrid is a format I have heard of but never actually tried myself.
Ultimately, we didn’t start a new league last weekend but that’s the plan the next time the six of us are together and we’ll have just the league format to make it work!
