NFL's 17-Game Season
Hey all!
It’s that time again for our weekly newsletter! This week, we feel it is probably good timing to bring up what to do with the 17-game (18-week) schedule. We discussed it on the show a couple of times, but maybe things have changed for us since then. I don’t think they have though. We’ll link one of those shows below.
Scott: I’m likely doing nothing this year. I’ll have my league run its normal 16 weeks and have the final two remain open. I’d like to see how teams handle those weeks. At most, I’ll discuss with the leagues about making the championship game span two weeks.
I do feel a lot of leagues will go with the default settings of their provider and that is completely fine. I don’t think it is anything worth stressing over. This is a complete preference call where I don’t believe there is a right, wrong, best or worst option. What works for your league, works for your league.
For me personally, I like the idea of removing a little of the luck that comes from having a one-week championship game. It adds an extra week of tension, fun stories of comebacks in the championship, more trash talk depending on your league. I far prefer that to adding an extra regular fantasy season game. At least for this year. Many of my leagues are 14 teams where we play 13 games and everyone plays each other once. I’d prefer to keep that situation going and have fun with the playoffs. I do understand the desire to have everyone involved for one extra week though. Very few wrong answers on this one… unless you are planning on your league playing through week 18.
Ryan: As usual, Scott and I agree on this topic. Since we just don’t know how teams will address the additional week of regular-season action, I don’t think we can make an informed decision at this point. Because of this, my leagues will likely stick to the same schedule we have used in recent seasons.
If Week 17 proves to be a “normal” week with Week 18 taking on the role of a quasi-pre-season slate of games, then I expect a change would be made beginning in 2022. I can see a case for either adding a week to the regular season schedule or, as Scott suggested, creating a two-week championship contest.
Here is the Commission: Impossible episode discussing this from May of 2020 — the discussion and ideas on it begin right around the 37-minute mark. Yes, we discussed this nearly a year ago. Subscribe to our pod and this newsletter to be almost literally a year ahead of others on things.
